Another Clare dual star chooses football

Clare's Cathal McInerney

Cathal McInerney is the latest Clare dual player to choose football over hurling.

Hurling boss Davy Fitzgerald confirmed to Clare FM this morning that the Cratloe clubman will concentrate solely on football in 2015. McInerney's decision comes after his club-mates Podge and Sean Collins also opted for football after Fitzgerald had made it clear that dual players wouldn't be accommodated in his squad next year.

McInerney represented Clare in minor and U21 football before going on to win All-Ireland U21 and senior hurling medals in 2012 and 2013 respectively. He memorably scored 2-1 in extra-time as the Banner defeated Wexford in last year's All-Ireland qualifier. Ironically, he started this year's drawn All-Ireland qualifier against the Model men and was sprung from the bench in the replay.

He also made a substitute appearance in Clare's Munster SHC semi-final loss to Cork.

Rated as one of the leading forwards on the Clare club football scene, McInerney was top-scorer for Cratloe in their capture of the Jack Daly Cup last autumn.
