Westmeath's most successful football club, Athlone, have been relegated to the intermediate ranks for the first time in their history.
The 20-times Flanagan Cup winners lost to south county rivals Castledaly on a 2-14 to 3-10 scoreline in this afternoon's relegation playoff at Hogan Park, Moate. Aided by a brilliant first half goal from former county player John Connellan, the Shannonsiders led by 1-9 to 0-7 early in the second half, but a brace of Lorcan Dolan goals turned the game in Castledaly's favour.

Jordan Marshment and Ray Connellan (in injury-time) got goals back for Athlone, but Castledaly held on to preserve their senior status and send Athlone tumbling out of the top flight.
