Midleton's reign as Cork senior hurling champions was ended by a determined Douglas team in yesterday's fourth round clash at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Few could have predicted Midleton's demise at half-time when they led by 1-9 to 0-8 thanks to Brian Hartnett's 13th minute goal. A Conor Lehane free increased the holders' advantage on the resumption before Douglas stormed back to level with points from Stephen Moylan, Alan Cadogan (two) and Mark O'Connor (two).

Midleton regained the lead with a Luke O'Farrell goal, but a Mark Harrington penalty edged the city side 1-18 to 2-14 ahead with six minutes remaining before another major from Mark Collins sealed the deal.

Meanwhile, Cork senior football kingpins Castlehaven came close to suffering a similar fate to Midleton in their fourth round encounter with Carbery Rangers in Clonakilty on Saturday.

Rangers took advantage of the enforced absence of Castlehaven's star forward Brian Hurley for a 10-minute period in the third quarter to wipe out a six-point deficit. Finbarr Slattery's charges regained the lead before John Hayes' late free tied up the scoring at 1-11 apiece and earned Carbery a replay.
