Rail strike hits home

August 22, 2014

Mayo supporters are sticking by their team

Kerry and Mayo football fans will be greatly inconvenienced this weekend when the first of the planned Irish Rail strikes take place.

SIPTU and National Bus & Rail Union members are holding five days of industrial action on Sunday, August 24, Monday, August 25, Sunday, September 7, Monday, September 8 and Sunday, September 21 over plans by the company for pay cuts.

The work stoppages coincide with Sunday's All-Ireland SFC semi-final between Kerry and Mayo, as well as both All-Ireland hurling and football finals on September 7 and 21 respectively.

Interestingly, Irish Rail workers have decided not to target the second All-Ireland SFC semi-final between Dublin and Donegal on Sunday week, presumably because strike action wouldn't have the same impact on that date as Croke Park is on the doorsteps of Dublin supporters, while there is no rail service from Donegal.
