Longford 'keeper Sheridan bows out

July 31, 2014

Longford keeper Damien Sheridan
Damien Sheridan has brought the curtain down on his 15-year Longford senior football career.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper from Dromard first joined the Longford panel in 1999 during Michael McCormack's spell in charge and was a virtual ever-present since. He defied the odds to go on to enjoy such a long career after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis as a 16-year-old.

While Sheridan's inter-county career yielded little in terms of silverware, he won the Kick Fada competition in Bray on a number of occasions. In winning last year's competition, he broke the world record by three metres with a kick of 75 metres.

A family man, Sheridan revealed to the Longford Leader that he had made his mind up to retire some time ago.

"It (the decision) was made a long time off," he said.

"I played as long as I felt I could, but I just felt with everything that went with it, this was the time to go."
