Reports of Antrim hero's death greatly exaggerated

The Antrim team of 1946
Mourners at the recent funeral of 1946 Antrim Ulster SFC winner Dr Sean Gibson got a pleasant surprise when Eddie Spence turned up to pay his respects to his former team-mate.

The Irish News reports that it was widely believed that Gibson was the last survivor of the famed Antrim side but turns out that former half-forward/midfielder Spence is very much alive and well.

"There are still two of us left - Fr Frank McCorry and myself," Spence said.

"Unfortunately, there was some misinformation that Fr Frank and me had long since passed on. One of the first to greet me at Dr Sean's funeral in Belfast was Jimmy Donnelly, who once played for Belfast Celtic.

"I felt like us the fabled Mark Twain remark - 'The report (of my death) is greatly exaggerated' - as so many folk were delighted to see me again."

Fr Frank McCorry is 92 and living in Belfast's Beechmount area and the pair belonged to the golden era of Antrim football.
