The Sheridan family of Mullahoran in Cavan had every reason to celebrate the local ladies team's Cavan Intermediate success last weekend as no fewer than nine family members - including a mother and four daughters - played their part in the final victory.

Mullahoran got the better of St Finbarr's on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-7 at Kingspan Breffni Park and Monica Sheridan had the honour of lifting the silverware surrounded by her daughters Louise, Mona, Geraldine and Aishling.

Monica's team-mates also included two nieces Una Brady and Julie-Ann Sheridan while Monica's husband, former Breffni County footballer Gerry who, incidentally, trains the county ladies team, had two nieces on the winning outfit, Kate Smith and Laura Sheridan.

"There were a lot of nerves in the house this morning, running around looking for socks and I was trying to keep the peace," Monica joked when speaking to the Anglo Celt.

A former county player, Monica revealed she intends to hang up the boots once Mullahoran's participation in the upcoming Ulster club campaign comes to an end.

"There are some wonderful young footballers coming through in Mullahoran now. It's their turn now. They're a great team of girls with a bit of luck we can keep going a bit further in the rounds ahead."
