Reaction: Mulholland feels Galway flop wasn't due to gulf in league status

Galway manager Alan Mulholland rubbished suggestions that his sides 19-point flop to Mayo in the Connacht SFC this afternoon, was as a result of Mayo playing in a higher division in the Allianz League.
The Tribesmen succumbed to their biggest defeat to Mayo in Connacht competition since 1907, as last years beaten All-Ireland finalists excelled in every sector of the park.
"I'm sure there are Division 2 teams who are able to compete with Division 1 teams better than we did today," Mulholland said.
"There definite is a gap between us and them at the minute, and that's something we are going to look at trying to have to bridge.
"The intensity of the game we weren't able to cope with. We made some silly errors at the back and we were always going to have to be playing to our max to be competitive in this game.
"The errors we made didn't help. However, that isn't an excuse, there was a gap between us today and we were second best."
What was a bad afternoon on the scoreboard for Galway was compounded with two sendings off - the dismissal of both captain Gareth Bradshaw and Niall Coleman during the closing 35 minutes - both on red cards.
"I thought they were a little harsh," Mulholland said.
"I think our lads were getting a little bit frustrated. I think the referee could have been cognisant of that. However, Mayo were physically dominant and intimidating us all over the pitch, so it was kind of ironic that we ended up with the two red cards.
"However, saying that I don't think that we can be making any excuses really in that regard."
