Reaction: Galway midfield duo's delight

May 04, 2013
Galway midfield duo Fiontán Ó Curraoin and Thomas Flynn were understandably ecstatic as they helped deliver a second Cadbury All-Ireland Under 21 Football title in three years for the Tribesmen at a wet Gaelic Grounds in Limerick tonight.

The pair were in the middle as Galway took honours in Croke Park two years ago with a 10-point win over Cavan in the decider.

And tonight was an equally joyous occasion as the pair picked up their second All-Ireland Under 21 medal.

"We are blessed to be honest, all the Grannies must be praying for us at home anyway and doing something right," Flynn mused.

"Whatever about Galway, when we get outside Galway there's a care-free way we play. All of the support and the crowd really seemed to get behind us.

"Alan Flynn and all the lads, including everyone in the crowd as well."

"When we went up by nine points in the second half we were having flashbacks of the game where we went so far ahead but lost it at Minor level.

"That shows how far the team has come on that we were able to withstand their comeback. Dave Cunnane and guys like that were travelling up the pitch to kick big scores. One to 20 and all the lads, it was brilliant."

Ó Curraoin was an inspirational leader and along with captaining his side, also picked up the Cadbury Hero of the Match award.

"It's great really, I can't put it into words what happened out there tonight. I'm over the moon and delighted we pulled through," he said.

He was keen to play down his role, and heap praise on the squad.

"From the start of the year every guys was used and we had one mind that it was 30 lads who would win this Championship and that's what happened."

He added, "We knew from the start of the year that we had the forwards to do the damage.

"If we were able to get the ball into them they would take the scores, and that's what happened.

"When Dave Cunnane got a score I knew things were going well! We came through with the likes of Adrian Varley and Ian Burke they really stood up also and done the job.

"We knew Cork would come back as it happened two years ago. The defence was excellent at that stage, and when James Healy came in as goalkeeper and made a great catch at the end, it was super."
