Video: O'Neill taking it one game at a time
07 June 2012
Tyrone's Stephen O'Neill
In this week's hoganstand.com video interview, Tyrone attacking ace Stephen O'Neill insists that he's not looking beyond Sunday's Ulster SFC derby against neighbours Armagh.
After securing promotion to Division 1 in the NFL, Tyrone feature prominently in the Sam Maguire race betting but, speaking from experience, the Clann na nGael clubman is not taking Armagh for granted.
He doesn't subscribe to the theory that this weekend's fixture will lack the intensity of previous meetings between the two counties.
"I'm sure it will be every bit as intense. Maybe the names and the faces have changed but everybody from Tyrone and Armagh, the young boys that have come in, grew up watching those sort of games and they'll be bringing that intensity to a new level."
The injection of new blood has revitalised the Red Hand County and O'Neill has been impressed with the newcomers to the squad.
"It's going well, there's a good blend. There's still plenty of the old lads there and the young lads have settled in well and they're performing well.
"We did well in the league and got promotion. That is what we wanted but we let ourselves down in the final so we've a lot to work on now for the championship, it's a bigger step up again.
"New players bring their own style of football to the team and that is what has happened this year. We've a lot of boys who have stepped up to the plate and done well. That's what is needed to refresh things and make other teams more aware of us."
So what are Tyrone's targets for 2012?
"An extended run in the championship would be a big bonus for us especially with so many young players, giving them the experience of the big day.
"We'll be taking it one game at a time and preparing as best we can. Hopefully that will be good enough on the day, giving it our best shot."
