Edenderry GAA made a small piece of history this week by becoming the first club in Offaly to appoint a full-time Games Promotion Officer.

Offaly ladies football star Mairead Daly has already begun working in her new role which is being part-funded by Leinster GAA. As GPO, the former WIT student is responsible for the implementation of a project or set of projects as outlined in GAA Games Development Policy. She will work as part of a team, in conjunction with other club personnel, to deliver set goals and objectives for all GAA sports.

Many GAA clubs in Dublin employ GPOs, but they are few and far between in rural Ireland.

Edenderry GAA chairman David Farrell told the club's website: "The appointment is a major undertaking on behalf of the club and requires a significant financial undertaking. However, with the support of part funding from Leinster GAA and the continued backing of our wider membership we are confident we will deliver the necessary investment."
