Derry manager Damian McErlain felt his side were “very sound” defensively in last night’s Dr McKenna Cup clash against Ulster University.

The Oak Leafers earned a place in the competition’s semi-final by virtue of their 1-20 to 0-7 win over the Belfast students and, speaking to the Derry post afterwards, McErlain was quick to set his sights on this weekend’s showdown with neighbours Tyrone.

“It (the semi-final against Tyrone) will be another game for us. We will get our university players back, which is good preparation for going into the league,” he stated.

“Jordanstown took a decision not to play their strongest side and understandably. As I said on Sunday past, two games of that magnitude in three days is not on."

He added: “We were trying to improve our own game and how we were setting up. Defensively we were very sound. We weren’t pushed to the limit or anything like it, but you can only do what you can do."
