Crokes paid the price for trying to run down the clock

Joint-manager Robbie Brennan felt Kilmacud Crokes invited trouble upon themselves by trying to run down the clock in their shock Leinster club SFC final defeat to Mullinalaghta.

The Longford underdogs scored 1-2 - the goal coming from a 59th minute Gary Rogers penalty - in the closing stages to turn a three-point deficit into a two-point win.

"I think that's probably the mistake we made - we started trying to hold it instead of doing what we've done all year which is go forward and attack," Brennan ruefully reflected.

"And for whatever reason, we reverted back to tryp, which we had been doing probably for the last three years, more of a defensive game, keep ball, go backwards with it."

Brennan didn't make an issue of the length of time it took Mullinalaghta's James McGivney's to leave the field after receiving a second yellow card in injury-time.

"There were two or three incidents, a black card situation … but look, I don't want to be blaming referees. We had our opportunities, we didn't take them, it's back to the drawing board and let's go again for next year," he added.
