James Horan will the next Mayo manager after the only other candidate for the post, Mike Solan, withdrew his name this afternoon.

Horan's return to the position he previously held between 2011 and 2014 is now a mere formality. The Ballintubber man, who led Mayo to the 2012 and 2013 All-Ireland finals, and four Connacht SFC titles, spoke last weekend of his excitement at the prospect of reprising the role.

A statement from Mayo GAA read: "Mayo GAA have been informed by Mike Solan that he is withdrawing his name for the role as Mayo Senior football team manager. We would like to thank Mike for putting his name forward for the role & look forward to seeing him involved with Mayo GAA in the future. The officers of Mayo GAA will now meet with James Horan to discuss his management team and plans for 2019."

A statement from 2016 All-Ireland U21 winning manager Solan, who was believed to have lined up former Tyrone star Enda McGinley as his coach, read: "Today, I have informed the Mayo County Board that I am withdrawing my name from the nomination process for the Mayo Senior Football Team Manager. I would like to thank everyone who helped me in this process and I would like to wish the Mayo Senior team every success in 2019 and beyond."
