John Maughan will be the next Offaly senior football manager.

The former Mayo, Clare, Roscommon and Fermanagh boss has been recommended for the post by a committee comprising Tommy Byrne, Pauric Pierce, Vinny Claffey and Eddie Fleming to succeed interim manager Paul Rouse.

Maughan famously led Clare to the 1992 Munster SFC and steered Mayo to All-Ireland finals in 1996, '97 and 2004. His new role means he will have managed at intercounty level in all four provinces.

Rouse stepped in as manager when Stephen Wallace dramatically departed following Offaly's Leinster SFC defeat to Wicklow and oversaw a Qualifier victory over Antrim before the midlanders were knocked out of the championship by Clare.
