Clare hurling is "like communism behind the Iron Curtain"

Ger Loughnane has a pop at Clare.

Ger Loughnane has blasted the style of hurling played by Clare since their All-Ireland triumph in 2013.

The Feakle man laments the Banner's failure to build on that success in a typically hard-hitting column in today's Irish Daily Star.

"The formulaic way in which Clare have been playing for five years now has had a deadening effect," he wrote.

"It's like the days of communism behind the Iron Curtain. Everyone on an assembly line doing the same job for the same pay. That just saps the spirit from people. Those Clare players should be at their peak, but there has been an unconscious withdrawal of effort."

He added: "I do think that they're such a bright bunch that there'd be no mental scars from the last five years if they were let off the leash. The opposite would be the case. If they got back to Croke Park, they're really come alive again.

"They love the big-day situation and have the quality to thrive in that arena.

"There are players that need to be told home truths too - like Colm Galvin and Tony Kelly. Their work-rate has to improve. Look at the greats of any sport. Look at Henry Shefflin, look at Lionel Messi - hugely talented, but the work they put in is outstanding too.

"Putting the body on the line for the cause, driving on other fellas, covering for other fellas. Some of the Clare fellas have never developed that quality."
