Veteran Eamonn Callaghan netted in the 52nd minute as Kildare came from behind to beat Westmeath by 1-19 to 1-11 in a SF challenge to mark the official 'switching on' of Kilcullen GAA's new floodlights.

The Naas clubman, who is heading into his 16th season with the Lilywhites, ensured there would be no winning debut for new Westmeath manager Colin Kelly. The visitors led by 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time, and were further boosted when Kildare conceded an own goal shortly after the restart.

But on a day when many newcomers were on show, Cian O'Neill's charges dominated the remainder of the game with Luke Flynn, Jimmy Hyland, Callaghan, Paul Cribbin, Eoghan Lawless and Daniel Courtney all getting on the scoresheet.
