There will be a contest to see who is the next Wicklow County Board chairman.

In a lot of counties, it is a case of the current incumbent staying on or just a sole nomination going forward for the position, but that won't be happening in the Garden County.

Chairman Martin Coleman's five-year term concludes this year and he will be replaced by either current county board vice-chairman Martin Fitzgerald or Rathnew chairman Bobby Dignam.

The latter held the position in the past when he was in the hotseat from 1989 to 1993, while Fitzgerald also has a wealth of experience on the executive committee.

There will also be a contest for the position of vice-chairman as Mick Hagan, Hugh O'Keeffe and Jimmy Whittle have let their names go forward.

The Wicklow convention takes place next Monday night at the county buildings in Aughrim and there will be other contests on the night as well as a number of motions debated.
