June 18, 2013Kevin Bell (26) was knocked down and killed in the Bronx area of New York on early yesterday (Sunday), in what is reported to have been a hit-
and-run incident. His family received news of the tragedy on Sunday morning and are "devastated and heart-broken" at their loss, SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley has said.
Extending his condolences to the Bell family, Mr Bradley said: "Kevin ' was an exceptional young man who brought joy and happiness to his family and to all who knew him. He had a great sense of fun and it was a pleasure to be in his company, as anyone who knew him will testify. He was well known as a superb Irish dancer who, along with family members, represented the St. Moninna GFC, Killeavy for many years in the Scor competitions.
"Obviously his family are in shock at the sad news which has reached them from America but in their bereavement they are finding great comfort in
the response and support of their family and friends - and of the local community. I have no doubt that in the days which lie ahead the people of Newry will
continue to rally around them and help them bear the great sadness- of Kevin's passing.
I would like to express my sincere condolences to Kevin's parents, brothers, sisters, family circle and friends and I know that in doing so I speak for the community as a whole. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam uasal," he added.
Kevin, who has a twin brother, was a hugely popular Gaelic footballer with Newry Mitchels, managed by his father Collie. Mr Bell senior is well known in the community as a teacher in Newry's Abbey Primary and manager of the school's Gaelic team. Kevin is survived by his parents Collie and Eithne, sisters, brothers and extended family.
Meanwhile a campaign has begun to help return Kevin's remains to his home town for burial. A fundraising quiz has been organised to take place in the Canal Court Hotel tomorrow (Tuesday 18th). while plans are underway to establish a justgiving page where the public can make donations online.
