Houlahan, Brian
January 01, 2001
Brian Houlahan was one of the greatest football followers ever to walk the streets of Armagh. His links with Harps were very strong as his father, the late Pat from Ogle Street, was one of the founder members when the Harps ' Club was reformed in 1945 and remained an ardent Harps man all of his life.
Brian's uncle was, of course, the great Joe Houlahan (Pat's brother) who also was a founder of Harps in 1945 but he was nationally famous as one of the greatest ever goalkeepers when he represented his club, Young Irelands, his county, his province and his country.
Both Joe and Pat Houlahan were among a group of men who helped build the Harps clubs through the 40s, 50s and 60s.
Brian's knowledge of football was immense and he could relate matches, players and incidents right through the years. His club links were also strengthened by the ties of his brother Paddy, and his nephew Oliver, both of whom wore the Harps jersey with distinction and who managed many Harps teams.
Brian's sad and untimely death leaves a terrible void for his mother Gertie, wife Margaret, sons and daughter and his entire family circle who will miss him deeply.
Armagh football loses a friend, a follower and a font of knowledge who met his friends with a smile before dissecting the latest match at county or club level. He shall indeed be sadly missed on the streets of Armagh.
To Gertie, Margaret, Frankie, Martin, Mary. To Paddy and his other family members and many friends, the deepest sympathy of all within Harps GFC is extended. Mary Queen of the Gael, pray for him.
