Yesterday was a red-letter day for St Malachy's hurling club, Portadown who played their first adult game in eight years.
Founded in 1959, the club had fielded only at underage level before making its senior comeback against Omagh St Enda's at the Tyrone Centre of Excellence in Garvaghey yesterday afternoon. And while a 1-5 to 2-11 defeat was their lot, it was great to see St Malachy's back in action after such a long absence,
St Malachy's will soon become home to the Armagh Centre of Excellence which is being developed on their grounds at a cost of £2.5 million.
The ambitious development will cater for all county teams and academy squads, and will include four full-size floodlit pitches, sports changing pavilion with multi-purpose hall, strength and conditioning suite, spectator stand / terrace, ball wall, air dome, car and coaching parking.
TweetSt Malachys Portadown first senior match in 8 years. A long time for no hurling in the town but here we are. Wrong end of the result vs Omagh though a great game in less than favourable conditions. Always an honour to wear your club colours 🟢⚪️🟡 pic.twitter.com/ZwkcIEaFco
