Oisin McConville believes the provincial championships are still relevant after witnessing the joyous scenes which followed Roscommon's Connacht SFC final victory over Galway yesterday.

There have been calls for a radical overhaul of the football championship, but winning a provincial title still means a lot to many counties.

"The provincial championships are biting back in a massive way this year," former Armagh star McConville told RTÉ Radio 1's Morning Ireland.

"There has been lots of talk about Ulster over the last few weeks but that Connacht final yesterday, Roscommon’s second half performance and then the outpouring of emotion tells you everything about provincial finals and what it means to teams like Roscommon."
