Busiest weekend of football championship

26 June 2012
Next weekend will be the busiest of the 2012 senior football championship campaign with no fewer than eleven games on the hectic programme on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday features the Donegal-Tyrone Ulster semi-final, plus six All-Ireland Round 1 qualifiers while on Sunday, Croke Park hosts the Leinster semi-finals (Kildare-Meath and Dublin v Wexford) while the qualifier schedule sees Roscommon host Armagh in Dr. Hyde Park and Fermanagh taking on Cavan in Brewster Park.

DONEGAL v TYRONE, Clones (Saturday, 16.30)
They meet for the second successive year and for the 18th time in all in the championship with Tyrone leading 10-6, with one draw. Donegal, the defending Ulster champions, beat Tyrone by 2-6 to 0-9 in last year's semi-final in a game where Colm McFadden (1-1), Dermot Molloy (1-0) and Michael Murphy were their top scorers. Sean Cavanagh (0-2), Stephen O'Neill (0-2) were Tyrone's top scorers.

Donegal are bidding to reach the Ulster final in successive years for the first time since 1992-93. Tyrone last reached the final two years ago where they beat Monaghan.

How they got here....
DONEGAL
Drawn in the preliminary round for a second successive year, Donegal are now seeking their seventh successive win in the Ulster championship. They beat Antrim, Cavan, Tyrone and Derry to win last year's Ulster title and have made an excellent start this year, beating Cavan (1-16 to 1-10) and Derry (2-13 to 0-9) to set up a semi-final clash with Tyrone.

Top Scorers
Colm McFadden.....2-8 (0-7 frees, 1-0 penalty)
Leo McLoone.........1-2

TYRONE
Tyrone have had one outing so far in Championship 2012, beating Armagh by 0-19 to 1-13 in the quarter-final. Martin Penrose top-scored on 0-8 (0-5 frees) while Stephen O'Neill, Owen Mulligan, Colm Cavanagh and Peter Harte all contributed 0-2 as Tyrone edged out their great rivals.

MEATH v KILDARE, Croke Park (Sunday, 14.00)
They meet for the third successive year in the championship with Kildare having won the previous two clashes in 2011 and 2010. It leaves Meath seeking their first championship win over Kildare since 2007. Kildare also beat Meath in the 2011 and 2012 Allianz League (Division 2) clashes.

Last Five Championship Clashes

KILDARE
They have one outing so far, beating Offaly. 0-19 to 0-6. Morgan O'Flaherty scored 0-5 (4 frees, 1 '45'), John Doyle (0-4) and Ollie Lyons 0-3 for Kildare who are bidding to reach the Leinster final for the first time since 2009 when they lost to Dublin.

DUBLIN v WEXFORD, Croke Park (Sunday 16.00)
They meet for the fourth time in five seasons and for the third successive year as Dublin attempt to maintain an excellent run in Leinster which has seen them lose only one of 23 games since the start of the 2005 provincial campaign. That was against Meath (5-9 to 0-13) in the 2010 semi-final. They also drew with Meath in the 2007 quarter-final but, other than those two games, they have won 21 times in Leinster since the start of the 2005 championship.

They beat Wexford in each of the last two years, albeit after tough struggles. Wexford are seeking their first win over Dublin in the Leinster championship since the 1956 Leinster semi-final which they won by 2-7 to 0-7 in Carlow.
