There were wins for Tyrone, Derry, Cavan and Monaghan in round 1 of the Ulster MFC this evening…

Tyrone secured their safe passage to the next round courtesy of a hard-earned 1-12 to 1-8 success over Donegal in Ballybofey.

Sean O’Donnell’s seventh minute goal was the difference between the two teams at the half-time whistle – Tyrone 1-4, Donegal 0-4 – but the sides were tied on 1-7 apiece as the game entered the final quarter after substitute Paul O’Hare found the back of the Red Hand County’s net.

Johnny Roddy’s seventh point of the contest edged the Tir Conaill men in front shortly after but Tyrone regained the lead thanks to a Daniel Fullerton brace.

Further scores from Mark Devlin (2) and Fullerton sealed the win for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Derry timed their run to perfection to claim the spoils at Armagh’s expense.

The scoreboard at the Athletic Grounds read 1-5 to 0-4 in the Oak Leafers’ favour when the final whistle was sounded.

Scores were at a premium throughout and the first-half finished with the hosts 0-3 to 0-1 ahead but the Ciaran McKeever managed Orchard County only managed one point after the resumption.

The visitors took over in the lead for the first (0-4 to 0-3) with nine minutes of normal time remaining and PJ McAleese made sure of the win when finishing off a fine move to score the game’s only goal shortly after.

An impressive second-half showing eased Cavan to a 10 point success over Fermanagh at Kingspan Breffni Park.

The hosts outscored their opponents by 2-7 to 1-2 after the break to run out commanding 2-14 to 1-7 winners.

Second-half goals from Jack Tully and Caoimhin McGovern were key ingredients in Cavan’s winning formula while midfielder Oliver Hughes Jordan scored a consolation goal for the Ernesiders in stoppage time.

Meanwhile, holders Monaghan scraped over Antrim at Corrigan Park by the narrowest of margins – 0-6 to 1-2.

The Farney County were 0-4 to 0-2 to the good at the halfway stage but were reduced to 14 men in the second-half and had to endure a nervy finish after Joe McNally scored an injury-time goal for the Saffrons.
