The time is not right for successful Slaughtneil boss Michael McShane to take over his native Antrim.

Ballycastle clubman McShane has guided Slaughtneil to an Ulster SHC two-in-a-row and was the only nomination received by the Antrim County Board to replace Terence McNaughton and Dominic McKinley at the helm of the Saffrons.

“I had a really good think about it and I met with the chairman (Collie Donnelly) last week to explain to him that I had decided to withdraw my nomination,” he explained to The Irish News.

McShane cited work and family commitments as well as loyalty to Slaughtneil as the reasons behind his decision.

He added: “I am a proud Antrim man, I want to see my county do well and I would be very honoured to manage Antrim some day. Right now I don’t believe it’s my time and that’s why I withdrew my nomination.”
