The GAA has pledged £1m (€1.16m) towards the promotion and development of Gaelic Games in Belfast over the next five years.

The Gaelfast initiative was launched at Belfast City Hall by new GAA president John Horan this morning. It is aimed at increasing participation in schools and reinvigorating the GAA in the country's second biggest city.

Coaching will begin in schools in September for one day per week and will be overseen by an appointed Belfast Regeneration Manager. The newly-created position will be advertised in local and national media next week.

"GAA in Belfast is a sleeping giant," Antrim GAA chairman Colin Donnelly admitted to RTE.

"This initiative will provide real impetus to Gaelic Games. Indeed, over the past number of years, we have seen a big increase in participation levels in GAA by schools from a range of community backgrounds, which has been fantastic."
