Nigel Hand St. Vincents

St Vincents 0-12 Blackhall Gaels 1-8

St Vincent’s welcomed Blackhall Gaels to Masterson Park for round 6 of their league campaign.

The home side got things rolling with a pointed free from Patrick McGill inside the first 2 minutes. Blackhall Gaels responded with a score from play to level it up. Graham Connor easily picked out Michael McIvor with a great kickout for him to run directly at the Blackhall Gaels defence to quickly respond with an excellent point between the posts.  Another point from McIvor came not too long after with a pointed free pushing the home side two points ahead of the visitors. A free awarded to Blackhall Gaels reduced the margins back to just one point. Both sides suffered a passage of wides and dropped short attempts at the posts. Nigel Hand calmed things down for the Vincents men striking the ball well in the 14th minute with a well-executed point from play.  Blackhall Gaels converted a free and kicked another point from play in the 19th minute after a hard battle for possession bringing the teams level again at four points apiece. McIvor kicked another great point from play. Conor White then kicked a great long ball to find Paddy McGill who took his mark and pushed the home side two points ahead on the 23rd minute. First chances of a goal from the visitors were denied as Graham Connor collects a high ball in from falling into the back of the net. McIvor again came through spotting the ball over the crossbar and between the posts. Paddy Arnold showed great leadership and experience as he added another point from play just before half time bringing the scoreline in favour of the men in maroon and white.

Half Time – St Vincents 0.08 Blackhall Gaels 0.04

Both teams were guilty of wides in the opening minutes of the second half. The visitors got the first score of the half on 8 minutes with a point from play. It was Blackhall Gaels who were again denied the first goal of the game as Graham Connor made a superb save. The ball was recycled back out to the St. Vincent’s who come away with their opening score of the second half with a pointed free from Nigel Hand. A direct long ball kick from Martin Fox picked out Nigel Hand who is on kicking form and secures his mark and kicks the ball between the posts. Nigel Hand was again accurate with his 3rd point in as many minutes.  Again, Hand steps up and kicks another pointed free pushing the Vincents 7 points clear of the visitors with 19 minutes of the half gone. Blackhall Gaels showed great fight and spirit and just when you thought they had a big hill to climb they kicked a point from play in the 53rd minute. This score ignited something in the visitors. Unfortunately for the home side the visitors next goal opportunity was not to be saved and the ball rattled the nets on the 56th minute reducing the deficit to just three points.  Remarkably Blackhall Gaels reduced the score line to just one between the teams after they converted a freed and closed the second half out with a point from play. St Vincents happy to come away with the win.
