Seneschalstown 0-08 Trim 1-10

Having being a perfect five from five up to press, Seneschalstown relinquished their 100% record in the JM Food Services Football League Division 2 with a disappointing performance on a glorious evening in Trim. The Reds were full value for their victory over the Yellow Furze men, and once they broke in behind the Seneschalstown rear-guard for a goal in the 15th minute Seneschalstown struggled and could never get close enough to reel in their hosts.

Despite this, Seneschalstown opened the game relatively brightly.   High pressure from the Seneschalstown forwards forced a handling error from a Trim player who was adjudged to have touched the ball on the ground.   Eoin Finnegan converted the free straight in front of the posts from 30 metres out to put the visitors in front after three minutes.

Trim levelled matters two minutes later but Seneschalstown would go back in front when they put together an excellent move from James Meade’s kickout. Finnegan was fouled upon receipt of a pass inside, and the number 14 had the simple task of popping the free between the posts. The lead was doubled after eight minutes when Alan Mulvany cut back in on his right foot and kicking over the best efforts of a number of Trim players trying to block him, he executed his shot to perfection and sent the umpire for the white flag.

However, that was as good as it got for the table toppers as Trim burst into life thereafter. Seneschalstown would not score again for the half as Trim put together a run of 1-05 unanswered before the short whistle.   The aforementioned goal arrived just as the second quarter began, and in truth Seneschalstown could not say they hadn’t been warned as two previous goal chances were scrambled away from their goalmouth prior to that major for the home side. Indiscipline was also costing Seneschalstown, five of Trim’s points in the opening half came from placed balls which Tom Carmody was slotting over all evening. Trim lead by six at the break, 1-06 to 0-03.

Despite what was said at the interval, Seneschalstown fell further behind after the interval when Carmody was allowed too much time and space to clip over his sixth point of the evening less than a minute after the resumption.

Alan Mulvany came up with a badly needed score for Seneschalstown after 32 minutes with a point from close range, their first in 25 minutes. Seneschalstown were hoping that this would kickstart the revival but Trim were able to keep them at arm’s length for the duration of the second-half. The sides swapped points again by the 37th minute, Dylan Keating was this time the one who found the target with an excellent point from a tight angle on the wrong side for a left footed kicker.

With 14 minutes of normal time to go Seneschalstown had the deficit narrowed to five points, Robbie Finnegan pointing off his left after the initial phase of an attack broke down from a Seneschalstown point of view when looking for a goal. Seneschalstown’s cause was not helped when they were temporarily reduced to 14 men for a black card offence and this, along with some poor decision making helped Trim to pick off a couple of scores at the other end to maintain their advantage.

Alan Mulvany pointed two frees in the time remaining but Seneschalstown could not muster up the goal they required to get within striking range in the eight minutes of stoppage time as they fell to their first defeat of the League. Seneschalstown can only hope to bounce back at home to St. Patrick’s in two weeks’ time.
