No one in Cusack Park that day felt we were anywhere in Dublin's league. They scored 1-28 from play, first pointed free with fifteen minutes left, in every aspect of the game they were far superior, it's no surprise that they've reached the final and I'd give them every chance of beating Offaly.

Without a doubt but its also true to say that if our for senior lads had been 100% focused on their grade it would have been closer.
We need to beat Meath tomorrow to stay in Mcdonagh and then develop an S&C strategy that will ensure we arent giving huge starts to the Dublins of this world.
Also I would be asking the board that now we are in 1B that no under 20s play senior inter county hurling until that team is out of the championship.
On a positive note good wins for Marys over Wexford CBS in 2nd year and Johnstown in 1st year and Athboy winning North Leinster senior schools with lots of Delvin and Brownstown lads

We definitely have better hurlers, in general, than Meath, and we're at home, but this is do or die for both teams, Meath been Meath will fight to the final whistle so we're in for a dogfight.

Important win to secure Joe Mcdonagh status.
David O'Reilly is an outstanding forward, 0-06 from play and created the goal.

Well at least we got that out of the way.Now take next matches v Laois seriously and the board need to do their job and find the right man for the job.
They made us struggle for a while but with Probably Kildare coming up Mcdonagh will be even tougher next year.

Reilly was superb. He's a fantastic player

Darragh Clinton stood up aswel. He hasn't always been consistent for Westmeath but he was excellent yesterday…

Laois prob put out a dummy team but this has to be about ourselves… Finish the season on a high

Re next year I'd be more worried about Carlow or Antrim coming down… Two serious outfits

It's a serious competition

Put in a performance against Laois and then look towards next year. Though yesterday we hurled well, you can see the fitness is behind where it needs to be. Key experienced players weren't able to play near their full potential because of not having it in the legs.
Again the u20 lads stood out.
We need to improve massively on the fitness and S&C ahead of next year and see can we add a few players to the panel. The club championship will show if we have anyone capable of coming in and improving the squad.

What lads aren't currently on panel that would make good additions?

Eamon Cunneen
Darragh McCormack
Niall O'Brien
Darragh Smith (he's young though)
Peter Murphy (if he had good club champ)
Rian Holding (would be like a new addition really as got no look in this year)

Anyone else?

A felah in Mullingar told me Luke Loughlin would switch to the hurlers if Kevin O'Brien took over

Westmeath 2025

If we are looking at a rebuild it's important that the experienced heads don't all go at once

I'd love to see a team like this out for the first round of the 2025 McDonagh

1. Jamie Mulkerrins
2. Conor Gaffney
3. Tommy Doyle
4. Johnny Bermingham
5. Niall Mitchell
6. Darragh Egerton
7. Rian Holding
8. Aonghus Clarke
9. David Williams
10. Eamon Cunneen
11. Darragh McCormack
12. Peter Clarke
13. Niall O'Brien
14. Killian Doyle
15. David O'Reilly

Seven U22 players - building for the future but with a good experienced core also

I like that team and trying Mitchell at wing back would be different, he has great vision.
Positional wise I'd switch Cunneen with Williams and Killian Doyle with McCormack.
We will see how the club championship pans out, I see Liam Varley is back with Castletown, if him and Peter Murphy have a good championship they'd be worth asking in.
Other players like Gary Greville, Eoghan Ahearn of Raharney, Shane Williams of the Gaels, Jack Galvin of Cullion and Josh Coll of Delvin have the ability to hurl at this level if they are available and want to commit.
Darragh Smith I can see being on the panel next year, young but physically strong.

Niall Mitchell Be better off going playing abit of football. Very talented footballer and has gave enough to the hurlers over the last few years.

He's captain of the hurlers so can't see that happening

I wouldn't see Loughlin going to the hurlers and I wouldn't see Mitchell going to the footballers. They are pivotal and mainstay players on both teams.

Cuneen surely isn't capabale of being midfield in senior inter county, doesn't have the physicality.
Not convinced on Peter Murphy. Eoghan Ahearn wasn't great in the county final. I agree with Darragh smith, bright future ahead at wing back
