Kilkenny and Galway battle to earn second wins ahead of Leinster SHC final round

Kilkenny were pushed all the way before picking up their second win in the Leinster senior hurling championship at Dublin expense this evening at Parnell Park where it finished 1-28 to 2-23.

Eoin Cody’s late goal ensured the Cats remain unbeaten in their provincial title defence, inflicting a first loss on the capital men in this year’s Bob O’Keeffe Cup race in process.

TJ Reid and the excellent John Donnelly combined for 0-15 for the visitors who led by 0-16 to 1-12 at half-time, with Conor Burke’s goal on the 35-minute mark leaving Dublin right in the frame.

Micheál Donoghue’s side would level it four times after the turnaround and then finally hit the front with a Brian Hayes goal on 54 minutes ahead of Donnelly (2) and Cody squaring it again for the Cats.

Twice more the sides would be level before Cody’s goal in the 69th minute ultimately decided the contest and broke Dublin’s hearts.

Earlier in the day, Henry Shefflin’s Galway side came from behind to defeat Antrim by 2-25 to 1-14 at Corrigan Park in west Belfast.

Conal Bohill’s goal in the run up to half-time saw the Glensmen take in an unexpected 1-11 to 1-10 lead at the break, but a red card for Ryan McGarry after a challenge on Conor Whelan three minutes into the restart proved the turning point.

From there, the Tribesmen stormed in front and, following a Conor Cooney penalty, they wouldn’t look back as they earned their second win in this year’s Leinster SHC to join Dublin on five points and sit one behind top placed Kilkenny ahead of next Sunday's find round which sees Derek Lyng's men at home against Wexford and Galway host Dublin Salthill while Carlow visit Antrim.
