Laois picked up their first win of this year’s Tailteann Cup campaign by edging out Wicklow on a 0-11 to 0-10 scoreline in Aughrim.

Having been denied both points by Carlow’s late comeback draw last weekend, the O’Moore men were made to battle for their victory against Oisin McConville’s side and held on after the points of Evan O’Carroll (2) and Killian Roche had put them three up with 10 minutes remaining.

The hosts had made the better start to the game as points from Johnny Carlin, Kevin Quinn and Mark Jackson (free) had them three ahead midway through the first-half and they’d hold a 0-6 to 0-4 advantage come the break.

It didn’t take Laois long to find their rhythm in the second-half and, with O’Carroll, Mark Barry and Paul Kingston on form, they’d be in front by the 55th minute and extend their lead to three before a late Wicklow push that included points from substitute Conor Fee (free) and Mark Kenny came up jst short.

In Pearse Park, Andy Moran’s Leitrim side made it two wins from two in Group 2 by edging hosts Longford (2-12 to 0-17).

Goals from Ryan O’Rourke (penalty) and Barry McNulty were instrumental for the Connacht men and, after a rally for Longford in the closing quarter, it’d be McNulty’s free in the third minute of injury-time that it’d win it for the visitors and cement their place in the knock-out stages with a round remaining.
